Debby was born in the Midwest, moving at age five to Delaware where she was raised. There she met and later married, Ed, her high school sweetheart.  The many good and many difficult experiences of her childhood gave Debby a desire to serve families by becoming a pediatric nurse. She attended the University of Delaware and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. After her sophomore year, she married Ed, three days before he began medical school. She is well acquainted with the life of a doctor’s wife after thirty-seven years of marriage.

After graduation, she practiced nursing on a pediatric unit in Wilmington, Delaware, until Ed graduated from medical school. Debby and Ed moved to Jacksonville, Florida for his internship & residency in the U.S. Navy where Kristi & Kim were born.  The family spent two years on the island of Guam where their third child, Jon, was born.  They returned to the US and lived in Newport, Rhode Island for Ed’s last 3 years in the navy.  In 1985, they settled in State College, Pennsylvania, where Ed practiced full time Emergency Medicine. There they enlarged their family in 1991 by adopting Jacob and David.

Together they learned a lot about team work in parenting and in encouraging one another in their church and community involvement. Debby kept her hand in nursing during these years teaching Childbirth Education Classes and volunteering at the PregnancyResource Center. However, her favorite job was nurturing their five wonderful children.

In 2003, after sensing a strong call from God, Debby & Ed moved to Richmond, Virginia, to become Area Co-directors for the Christian Medical and Dental Associations’ Campus and Community Ministries on the Medical College of Virginia campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. This has been a fulfilling and rewarding co-labor for them as a couple.

Debby’s love of teaching is evident as she interacts with students at VCU, leads two women’s Bible studies, and teaches children at her church. She especially enjoys mentoring women and the blessing of building relationships with them and their Lord. Together she and Ed strengthen their own marriage as they frequently do pre-marital and marital counseling. She loves spending time in the Word and growing in her love and knowledge of God.

Enjoying cooking is a blessing as Debby is often preparing food for the students and for her family. She also enjoys visiting with friends, sewing, gardening, hiking, and reading.  Kayaking on Lake Anna, where the Reads live, is a favorite shared time for Debby and Ed. They both love spending time with their dear children and their three precious grandchildren Megan, Lauren, and Aiden.
